Background

Beginning in the autumn semester 2021, ETH Zurich and the Paul Scherrer Institute PSI – in collaboration with HitchHike – will create the “PSI Link”, a direct point-to-point connection for carpools running between Campus Hönggerberg and PSI in Villigen (AG).

Find carpools easily using “Location Switch”

The “PSI Link” offers students and employees from both institutions, who commute between Campus Hönggerberg and PSI on a regular or as-needed basis, a new and easy way to offer or find carpools for the approx. 40-minute drive between the two locations.

Goal: Better use of vehicles & shorter driving time

This offer targets an increased occupancy of the vehicles used, a shortening of the travel time, and creating new personal contacts between both of the affiliated institutions. The offer is available to all employees of ETH Zurich and PSI.

HitchHike Carpooling - Location Switch Software Modul

Currently, there is one parking spot located at ETH Zurich - Campus Hönggerberg and two spots at the Paul Scherrer Institute. These parking spots have been marked as HitchHike Pick-up and Drop-off points.

Our Carpooling Points:

  • Paul Scherrer Institute, Villigen (PSI Ost and PSI West)
  • ETH Zurich - Campus Hönggerberg, Zurich

Carpooling Points at other Corporate locations are being reviewed.

Beyond this, all users also have access to the Switzerland-wide HitchHike network.  Link to the Swiss Carpooling Network

An enterprising idea

The idea of a carpooling platform originates from the Paul Scherrer Institute. The collaboration with HitchHike began in 2017. The expansion emerged in cooperation with ETH Zurich - Campus Hönggerberg. Why not support the individual transportation within the company through the principle of sharing?

Role model in terms of sustainability

A round trip from ETH to PSI with HitchHike: this will turn the transfer into a sustainable quantum leap!

By supporting the use of carpools for the transfer between Campus Hönggerberg and PSI, we are anticipating an exchange of information that goes beyond the perimeters of the institution, enriching conversations, as well as the establishment of new business relationships. Simultaneously, we are contributing to a more sustainable mobility.

The HitchHike platform creates an offer that demonstrates tremendous potential for improving the current mobility situation. If the occupancy per vehicle increases, the regional traffic congestion could be reduced beginning today.

As institutions, both ETH Zurich and the Paul Scherrer Institute are taking on the exemplary role of enablers. With the HitchHike platform, they will facilitate the efficient and effective creation of carpools for their employees.

  • The platform is accessible by everyone.
  • The use of HitchHike is free of charge. A possible contribution to the fuel costs will be agreed individually between the participants.
  • The principle rules for the use of the platform can be found in the HitchHike Code of Conduct.
  • The Web app can be used on a desktop, smartphone and tablet (no download required).
  • HitchHike is for everyone who regularly takes the same route (commuters), or for those who spontaneously need to carpool > Boarding
  • For communities and companies, HitchHike offers professional solutions.
